Corporate Fury

That project I've been working on for something over a year is done, and it's out! As in, you can go buy it now, on the App Store. So if you have any love of me (or if you hate me so much that you love me), please support my pitiful struggles and buy it! It's only 2 bucks, despite presenting somewhere in the area of 3-6 hours of 3D skull-crushing joy, and that's not even counting a lot of the extra stuff. Here's the trailer.

You can get more info on what it really is over at my company page. Oh, and here's the direct iTunes link. I'll have a lot more to say about the game and its development process in the future, but for now, there it is.

Isolation Mode

I'm just posting to note that I've been getting a shitload of stuff done on my game, but there's still a lot to do. So I'm going to continue to ignore all of my e-mails and online communications for another week or two from now. Once my game is finally done, I'll be rejoining humanity and addressing all of those bug reports (and maybe even some feature requests) on That Tool That I Pretend I Didn't Make. I've also received quite a few e-mails in the past 10 or so days. Since like 5 of them are complaining about the exact same problem, I'm going to answer them all here, and just hope the people who sent them give enough of a shit to check my web site. Read more...

Bloody Reincarnation

This post is Behelit ApprovedI recently went and pretty much rewrote the heart of mesh2rdm. The little hacks here and there which provided special-case per-format behavior were getting out of hand, and this meant it was time to lay waste to all of them at once. The results were satisfactory, and mesh2rdm v4.3 has begun its terrible reign.

Before I go on, you can get the newest version of mesh2rdm over on the projects page. Having said that, there's a whole lot of new shit in this version. That includes new file formats, new export functionality, and new preview functionality. Read more...

COLLADA Madness

COLLADA import When I implemented COLLADA import in mesh2rdm with FCollada, I didn't even attempt to seek out documentation.

This was because after one look at the library's headers, it seemed quite evident how to use it and what to do with it, and import support (including animations) turned out to be a simple afternoon job. I was not aware at the time that I had no choice in the matter! Upon going to implement export support, things weren't so obvious, so I went looking for some actual documentation. Well, that didn't go so well. Read more...

New Things

Oath in Felghana I decided to take a break from my commercial game because non-stop scripting, object placement, and high-level code support is really making me want to throw myself off the side of a mountain.

I have always had a special love of Ys games, so I decided to target the "ymo" model format used in the 3D PC remake of Ys 3 (and probably others, although I don't have them, so I can't check), and stuck support for it in mesh2rdm. It was a nice day project. It's also a weird format and seems like it would be totally inefficient to parse in on load time. But I guess some formats are just crazy like that.

You can get the new version of mesh2rdm (v3.8) here. There's so much other crap in it that's changed or been added that I'm not even going to attempt to sum it up. Although most of it's probably noted on the massive "help" message that comes up when you run it with no command line arguments.

Don't :P Where You Eat

It is common for us petty engineers to hold our knowledge and abilities in high esteem. When we practice a trade that can only be known to the common person through weeks, months, or years of learning and training, such a thing is to be expected. However, because of this, and because of the competitive nature of humans, we often lose sight of the fact that this knowledge is merely a product of our own circumstances, and has come at a price for all of us.

That price can be measured in time, effort, and sometimes even in a literal sense (for those who have invested money in an education). However, the fact that we were able to pay the price and had the will to do so is nothing to be proud of. It's merely been a part of who we are, and a part of our natural circumstances in this world. If we lose sight of this, we will begin to :P uncontrollably. Read more...
