Genesis Wallpaper

Something didn't look quite right about Genesis after being exported, and I finally realized it was the hair feathering. In removing "redundant" triangles, those were being lost, because of a little fault in logic (which was fixed in that v1.81 release of mesh2rdm). But while I was investigating, I made some awesome Genesis wallpaper.

New Model Support

I've just finished packaging up the latest version of mesh2rdm, v1.81, which now contains support for a number of new model formats. Grab it here. This version has lots of other new features over the previous version, including support for GHOUL2 (Jedi Knight II/Jedi Academy) models and animations.

This version can also export any skeletal mesh to Valve's .smd format. If you're looking for a 3D Studio Max .smd importer, I use this one, but there is an importer for just about every modeling suite out there. If you've been wanting to rig some new models up over the existing AVALANCHE skeleton, this is what you've been waiting for. Read more...

More Crisis Core

I was just about to go to bed, when I checked my e-mail and saw someone had delivered unto me a batch of Crisis Core character models. I've been relying on others to send them, as I don't actually have a modded/hacked PSP in order to rip the contents of my own disc. So I took a look through and collected some screenshots.

I must say, for a PSP game, these models are pretty incredible. I don't know if I've ever seen such a ridiculously efficient use of UV space, either. Quite impressive. That Tifa model is a lot more detailed than I remembered from the game, too. Most of these models have more detail than you could ever see, given the camera position in the game.

Crisis Core Model Format

A couple of weeks ago, I believe it was, I was casually browsing the Qhimm Forums, as I tend to do now and then. It's surprising how often I happen to see something intriguing there. This time I saw that someone named koral was attempting to figure out some Crisis Core file formats.

I found this appealing for a number of reasons, not the least of which being that Crisis Core contains some awesome Gackt models. Luckily for me, koral had already done a great deal of work in figuring out the image and model formats. So, I began looking at the work koral had done so far. Read more...

Prey Memorabilia

Prey TeamOne of my old coworkers from the Human Head Prey days recently posted an awesome pic on Facebook. It was a caricature sketch of our whole team from back then. It reminded me that I'd saved some photos from back then too in the old posterity folder, which I'd long since forgotten the existence of. So I went digging and found some more happy nostalgia-filled things. On the left is our original team photo, and below are some community-made bits, including that caricature I mentioned. The "wrenches only on the asteroid!!! -Rich" post-it gave me quite a tickle. In the team photo, I'm the guy in all black standing front-center next to Tim. Read more...

Why Modding Is Dead

I recently got into a conversation with a bunch of people in #qc, an old IRC channel rooted with Bot Epidemic/Inside3D (Quake-centric communities) users, about mods in games today.

This seems like something that's pretty worth talking about. We really don't have much of a mod community today. Everything is very disjointed. Back in the Quake days, we had central hubs for everything. ftp.cdrom.com, stomped.com, and now-sold-out gaming news site Shacknews.com was even rooted in the Quake community, as "sCary's shuga shack". All of these closely-knit community hubs basically ensured that if one person knew about your mod, so did everyone else.

That is a big problem today. Even when people make mods, no one else knows they're out there. ModDB is incredibly disjointed in and of itself, and mods that do not resemble real AAA commercial titles from full teams get little to no attention, as they do not have a parent news feed to rely on for publicity. Which leads me to the next issue; production value requirements. Read more...
